Start With a Trip to Barber Orchard

If you've spent any time around Western North Carolina, you've probably heard of Barber Orchard.

It's a staple of the area and one of those places that just feels like fall.

Barber Orchard is open seasonally from August 1 through December 24, making it an easy stop throughout the fall season.

And, of course, you can't talk about Barber Orchard without talking about the food.

Their apple cake and apple fritters are local favorites and are exactly the kind of fall treats that make you want to come back for more.

Pick up some apples, grab something sweet, and enjoy the drive through the mountains.

Sometimes that's all you need for a perfect fall afternoon.

Make a Stop at Kandi's Bake Shop

If you're exploring Waynesville and looking for something sweet, Kandi's Bake Shop is another local stop to add to your list.

There's something about visiting a local bakery in the fall that just fits the season.

Grab a pastry, pick up something to take home, or make it part of a morning coffee stop before heading out to explore the mountains.

It's these smaller local businesses that help make the experience of living in Western North Carolina feel different from simply visiting for a weekend.

Experience the Apple Harvest Festival in Downtown Waynesville

If you're looking for a true community experience, mark your calendar for the Apple Harvest Festival in Downtown Waynesville on October 17.

The festival brings the community together right in the heart of downtown, making it a great opportunity to enjoy the season while exploring local businesses, food, crafts, and the character of Waynesville itself.

Rather than simply driving through town to see the fall colors, this gives you a chance to actually experience the community.

And if you've never spent much time in downtown Waynesville, the festival is a great excuse to explore it.

October 17 is one to put on the calendar.

Head Into Cataloochee Valley

For something a little more wild, take a trip into Cataloochee Valley.

Located within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cataloochee is known for its beautiful mountain scenery and opportunities to see wildlife.

One of the biggest draws is the elk.

Fall is an especially interesting time to visit because elk are active during their annual rut, and you may hear them bugling across the valley.

You may also encounter other wildlife, including black bears.

But remember: these are wild animals. Give them plenty of space, never approach or feed them, and follow Great Smoky Mountains National Park wildlife guidelines.

And even if you don't see an animal, the drive into Cataloochee Valley is worth the trip for the scenery alone.

Don't Forget to Look Up

Of course, one of the biggest reasons people come to Western North Carolina in October is the fall color.

And the great thing about the mountains is that you don't necessarily need a specific destination.

Sometimes the best view is found while you're driving.

Take a scenic route.

Stop at an overlook.

Explore a road you've never taken.

Pull over when you see a view you can't pass up.

Because of the region's changing elevations, the timing of fall color varies throughout Western North Carolina. Higher elevations generally begin changing before the valleys, giving the area an extended fall-color season.

That means you can spend several weekends exploring different parts of the region and still find something new.

One of our favorite things about fall in Western North Carolina is that you don't have to choose just one activity.

Or maybe your perfect fall day looks completely different.

That's the beauty of living here.

There are so many ways to experience the mountains.
